My Child Called a Family Meeting to Fix My Relationship With My Mother
On a particularly trying day with my children…
My daughter asked me:
“Mom, what’s a question your mom asked you all the time?”
I told her:
“Why don’t you ever listen to me.”
She thought about this very seriously.
Then said:
“You should listen to her. We need to call her and tell her you listen.”
In her mind, emotional issues are not something you carry.
They are something you resolve immediately with a phone call and proper reporting.
She wasn’t being funny. She was being efficient.
To her, unresolved feelings are just unfinished tasks.
I, on the other hand, was standing there realizing I had just been enrolled in a mandatory family mediation program I did not sign up for.
If your child has ever tried to schedule emotional accountability on your behalf, welcome to parenting.
