Homeschool Check-In: Keep It Simple
Just a little homeschool check-in over here.
I’m not sure if I shared this last time, but recently my daughter suddenly started writing her letters and numbers backwards.
And of course… my brain went straight to:
Is the curriculum wrong?
Did I miss something?
Do I need to switch everything?
Because apparently that’s where we go as moms.
But the solution?
It was simple.
I grabbed a highlighter, wrote the correct letter, and had her trace it after she gave me her answer.
That was it.
No new curriculum.
No spiral.
No overthinking required.
A Little Reassurance Goes a Long Way
It also reminded me of something important:
It’s okay to give reassurance in kindergarten.
Somewhere along the way, I picked up this idea that you always had to get the right answer immediately.
No help.
No guidance.
Just… perform.
And honestly? That mindset stuck with me way longer than it should have.
The “Best Guess” Struggle
Don’t even get me started on “best guess spelling.”
That caused more issues than it helped—for me, at least.
It followed me all the way into college.
Because when you’re suddenly expected to write 10–20 page papers, “best guess” doesn’t exactly cut it anymore.
(And no, I did not have ChatGPT sitting next to me back then.)
What did help?
Having access to the right materials—whether that was a good old-fashioned library or online resources.
The point is:
support matters. guidance matters. clarity matters.
When They Hit a Hiccup
So if your child hits a bump in the road…
Take a breath.
Stay calm.
And before you go researching a brand new curriculum at 10pm—
keep it simple.
Sometimes it’s not a big problem.
Sometimes it’s just a small adjustment.
A highlighter.
A little guidance.
A bit of reassurance.
And you’re back on track.
Final Thought
We don’t need to reinvent everything every time something looks off.
Sometimes we just need to pause long enough to realize:
this is part of learning.
For them… and for us.
