Day Four Without AC, But At Least the Kids Have Beds
It is a balmy 78 degrees in this house.
Day four without air conditioning.
I am not okay.
The AC unit is officially toast, which we confirmed yesterday. Unfortunately, it wasn't the only thing the lightning decided to take with it.
All of the circuits that were under 120 volts and running at the time of the strike are toast too.
And if you own a home built sometime after electricity was invented, you can probably imagine how much that affects.
Heating.
Electric.
AC.
Internet.
You know.
Basically everything that makes a house function in the 21st century.
So while my husband is dealing with one thing and I'm coordinating another, I have apparently added lightning strike recovery coordinator to my already impressive list of job titles.
But today, something finally went right.
The kids' beds were built.
And honestly?
I think they turned out wonderful.
My daughter's room is finally feeling like her room. Her bed, mystical unicorn quilt, canopy, stuffed animals, books, little treasures and all the things that make it hers.
My son's room is coming together too, complete with his new bed, his vintage vehicles quilt, books, toys and approximately a thousand things that apparently cannot be stored anywhere except directly on the floor because he owns a fleet of trucks.
And I love it.
Because these aren't magazine rooms.
They're not Pinterest-perfect.
There are toys everywhere.
There are stuffed animals.
There are their best friends drawings.
There are little pieces of childhood scattered around.
And I'm okay with that.
Actually, I'm more than okay with it.
My kids are having their childhood here. Pinterest be damned.
So yes, the AC is dead.
The lightning took out electrical circuits.
The house is 78 degrees.
I'm running fans everywhere.
I'm coordinating repairs and maintenance and trying to remember which thing is currently broken.
But tonight, my kids have beds.
They have their little spaces.
They have their books and toys and quilts and all the weird little treasures they've decided are important.
And for tonight, that's enough.
but if you were to ask me, I would say “I’m fine, it’s fine, its all fine” that maybe the military side talking….
The rest can wait.
Well...
Except the AC.
The AC cannot wait.
I am not built for four days of Southern summer without air conditioning.
I may have strong roots, but apparently they still require climate control.
